Who is eligible for this course?

First responders and other public safety personnel (PSP) 18+ residing in Canada who want to self-manage their alcohol concerns and reduce consumption. This course is not suitable for those with severe substance use, psychosis, mania, or high risk of suicide.

Evidence-Informed: Past research on this course by collaborators shows participants report significant improvement in their alcohol consumption and mental health.
Completion Certificate: This certificate confirms that the participant has successfully completed the Course, which includes approximately 6 hours of educational content. Recognition for continuing education credits or professional development requirements is determined by the participant’s regulatory body, employer, or professional association.

Who developed the PSP Alcohol Reset Course?

This Course was originally developed in Switzerland and then adapted and researched by the Online Therapy Unit at the University of Regina. Following, PSPNET tailored the Course to address the unique challenges of public safety personnel (PSP) drawing on experiences with alcohol from PSP and renamed it the PSP Alcohol Reset Course.
Why was the PSP Alcohol Reset Course developed?
The PSP Alcohol Reset Course was developed for PSP who want to change their drinking habits. It was designed to overcome the following barriers:
- Personal (e.g., many PSP prefer to work on alcohol concerns independently)
- Geographical (e.g., difficulty accessing care while posted to remote locations)
- Logistical (e.g., shift work, busy work-family life)
- Stigma (e.g., negative perceptions of accessing mental health support)
- Limited resources (e.g., insufficient services tailored to PSP)
What does the PSP Alcohol Reset Course involve?

The PSP Alcohol Reset Course teaches evidence-based information and skills specifically for Canadian public safety personnel (PSP) seeking to self-manage their alcohol concerns and consumption. This course consists of 6 core lessons, each presented online via slideshows and downloadable exercises, that can be completed at your own pace.
What does the online screening process involve?

The online screening will take approximately 20 mins to complete. You will be asked to provide personal information such as name, address, telephone number, and email address via online questionnaires. Information will also be collected on your demographics, public safety experience, alcohol and substance use, mental health symptoms, and treatment history and perceptions. Please note that your participation and information are confidential and will not be released to any outside source including your employer(s).
How much time does it take to complete the self-guided PSP Alcohol Reset Course?

The PSP Alcohol Reset Course is designed to take 6 weeks. We recommend scheduling ~ 1 hour to review each lesson content with additional time to reflect on and implement changes. How much time you spend on the suggested activities is ultimately up to you. Keep in mind that course materials are accessible and downloadable for 12 weeks post-enrollment!
Is a formal mental health diagnosis required?

No, a diagnosis is not required. ICBT is also appropriate for those seeking proactive support!
Can I enroll if I am receiving support from other mental health services?

We typically recommend that clients do not enroll in PSPNET if they are currently receiving regular support from another mental health professional. There may be instances, however, when this is appropriate, such as when this is recommended by their therapist as a supplement to existing treatment (e.g., when seeing a psychiatrist primarily for medication management, when on a long waiting list for services).
Is ICBT appropriate for PSP?

Yes! All PSPNET materials were developed for Canadian PSP. We will also be seeking your feedback throughout the Course to help us identify areas for improvement.
Are PSPNET’s services confidential?
Yes! PSPNET is delivered on our secure online website which is located at and maintained by the University of Regina. Below are several precautions in place to help protect clients’ privacy:
1. Your email address will only be used by PSPNET for matters related to the course. Email address will never be released to any third parties.
2. Your login username and password are unique.
3. Information transmitted to our server is encrypted using secure socket layer technology (SSL).
4. Access to the PSPNET server is strictly controlled and housed in a secure environment within the University of Regina with firewall protection. This means that limits are in place for who has access to the server. The only people with access are the primary project developers, the server administrators, and the service administrator.
5. All questionnaire responses will be periodically retrieved for research purposes. This data will be kept on a secure server by the researchers. No identifying information will be stored with the questionnaires.
How is the PSP Alcohol Reset Course being evaluated?

The PSP Alcohol Reset Course is evaluated using the online questionnaires administered at screening, during the course, and after course completion. These questionnaires vary in length (5-20 mins) and provide us with important data for our research studies. Thank you for your participation!
Will the PSP Alcohol Reset Course be offered in French?

Once we have evaluated the PSP Alcohol Reset Course, we will explore expansion with a French version. Keep your eyes out for an update here!
How long will PSPNET be providing the PSP Alcohol Reset Course?

The PSPNET team is funded until 2028 and we are currently working on a sustainability plan to continue services beyond 2028.
